A new year

Emerging from a period of personal challenges in which there has been little room to move.

I'm really looking forward this year to beginning an artistic journey.  I feel as though for many years I have been cut off from the world of imagination and look forward to exploring this territory, this way of being, once more.  Stories, culture, images...imagination - perhaps imagination and creativity are far more important and intrinsic to our nature than we think.

They were surely a vital part of the lives of our ancestors.... the embrace of the unknown... connection with a life force, with being and beauty. And yet now, suddenly, the human mind has been detached from imagination with modernity, too sharply.

It will be worthwhile to reactivate and rediscover inner truths.  For me this will undoubtedly be a spiritual path also .

Within my art, I would be very interested in looking at where the western imagination meets eastern art, spirituality and philosophy.  Buddhist art is of particular interest.  I love the idea of visual art which facilitates spiritual insight.  Working towards a buddhist art in the western context is also an interesting idea.

Interested also in looking at the phenomenon of mental illness through art.  What it teaches. Looking at the causes for it which lie in our culture and how to heal and to continue to be with meaning in the midst of it.

Hopefully there will be the time and opportunity to get back to tending to and being with plants also.

Amidst the carnage, chaos destruction of the modern world there sits the village.... a space of caring and opening. Like a lotus it begins to unfold.

A more detailed account of my village journey is to come, but for now, keeping it short and sweet, here are a few of the most important parts of my village life.

Time in the garden. Watching, learning and loving. Studying and doing. Working towards a vision of a sustainable village. Being able to share food with villagers and friends. To look after and be looked after by the plants.

The village community. The village moves and changes and I am here now to support it and it's members. Here to listen to visions and plans, to share thoughts and to be a part of it all.

Art. Creating, making, I'm beginning to learn about something I've known all along. Beginning a new journey to the source. Quietly tending my garden. Looking forward to sharing...

The village is a gift.
